Bellator MMA, previously known as the Bellator Fighting Championship, launched in 2008. Under the guidance of CEO Bjorn Rebney, Bellator has grown into the United States' #2 Mixed Martial Arts organization. While they lack the mainstream appeal and brand recognition of industry leader UFC, Bellator has developed a devoted following due to their high-quality events, recognizable veteran fighters, and unique 'season' format.

Unlike UFC, where matches are made in a more boxing-style fashion, Bellator operates on a 'season' format. Each 'season' features a single-elimination tournament in which eight fighters vie for $100,000 and a shot at the title. While this format does sometimes result in high-profile fights not happening, it adds a layer of suspense to every event. Not only that, $100,000 is a huge purse for anyone fighting outside of the UFC, so tournament final fights tend to deliver.

While Bellator doesn't operate on the same level as UFC in terms of talent or production value, they are backed by Viacom, which means they have both a nationwide TV platform and a robust marketing presence. Consequently, the company's profile has continued to grow, enabling them to sign a variety of former UFC stars, including Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson, Karo 'The Heat' Parisyan, and Cheick Kongo. These recognizable names, coupled with a roster of homegrown stars including Eddie Alvarez, gives every event a dose of star power.

For sports bettors, Bellator offers a variety of enticing options. For one thing, the volatile nature of MMA and the tournament format means that upsets create mismatches. A fighter might advance in a tournament on the strength of a lucky punch, but lightning doesn't usually strike twice, and that is a mismatch you can exploit. Also, the public in general is not as educated on Bellator's roster as UFC, and sometimes lines get skewed, especially in fights involving high-profile UFC veterans. Bellator is only going to continue to grow and gain market share as fans crave competition, so now is the right time to start making money betting on Bellator. Bellator is back in the Thack! No, that's not a Mike Tyson joke.

The promotion returns to a familiar place this weekend when they take show #239 down to Thackerville, Oklahoma.

We have an incredible main event for you. The winner of this fight could go on to be the next Welterweight Champion and then the loser fights his way to the top for a challenge rematch.

One of the top wrestlers in Penn State history, Ed Ruth's overall game has improved each time we've seen him compete in the Bellator cage.

Bellator Oddschecker

Ed has one loss on his record and that was a submission to Nieman Gracie. No shame there.

His opponent, Ukraine's Yaroslav Amosov, has zero losses, though. The multiple-time Combat Sambo World Champion may be one of the only Welterweights in the world with a grappling game, specifically wrestling, to match that of Ruth.

I was surprised to see the Ukrainian as a slight favorite. More on this one in a few.

The online sportsbook BetOnline has the betting odds for this week's Bellator 239 event. Let's make some picks for the rest of the main card and attempt to tackle this main event.

Valentin Moldavsky vs Javy Ayala

-800
+550

Javy has shocked us before.

Bellator oddschecker championship

This is the heavyweight division and Ayala, who trains at a high-level Muay Thai school, can starch anyone in an instant.

Will he even get the opportunity? I give him 2-3 minutes of striking time, tops.

Javy has a chance to catch him with a fight changing punch but I put that at about 5%.

Tyrell Fortune vs Timothy Johnson

-800
+550

Wow, I had to go back and look at BetOnline to double-check that. The same odds for each of these fights…

Well, we have a Combat Sambo champ fighting an overweight kickboxer in the previous matchup.

In this fight, we get a member of Team USA Wrestling who, in three years in college, was a two-time JuCo national champ and once at Division II.

In the other corner, we have Timothy Johnson who has NOWHERE NEAR the athletic ability as his opponent and has lost 5 out of his last 8 fights.

This is an easy one.

Myles Jury vs Brandon Girtz

-250
+210

This one pains me just to think about it.

Brandon Girtz is just the type of fighter who Myles Jury beats, but the thought of putting my money on that James Franco-looking, underachieving…makes me cringe.

Girtz can really crack! He's also a southpaw but I know Myles likes to switch stances also.

Jury is going to have a massive reach advantage in this one and, yes, he has had some high profile losses where he just seems to freeze up in there and not pull the trigger.

The 'worst' fighter he has ever lost to is Andre Fili. That is saying a lot. Myles beats the guys he is supposed to and fights badly against guys on or around his level.

Jury is an excellent submission guy so I don't think Brandon will be shooting a blast double unless he gets hurt with something on the feet.

This one will probably be a kickboxing match but boy goes Girtz bring it! He dips hard loading up for massive punches and explodes forward with aggression.

I think Jury can counter with a head kick and/or a well-timed knee when the shorter man makes himself shorter. The (-250) is a lot to pay for Myles, though, so as the Thai's say it's 'Up to you'.

Yaroslav Amosov vs Ed Ruth

Yaroslav Amosov vs Ed Ruth

This is a big fight! Friday night, guys! Don't miss this fight!

I'm telling you, both men have ceilings high even to take them not only to Bellator title but also to and through the UFC ranks.

One man may be just slightly more polished as a mixed martial artist, though.

I love Ed Ruth. Don't get me wrong but when he is fighting out there, I see kickboxing then wrestling or boxing followed by a takedown.

It isn't seamless like we have seen from such legends like Georges St Pierre and Frankie Edgar.

Bellator Oddschecker Horse Racing

Amosov is seamless, though. That man is smooth. It makes sense, though. He is 22-0 while Ruth is 8-1.

Ed will have an explosiveness advantage and who knows, maybe his American ‘Wrasslin 'Trumps' the Russian Sambo.

Usually, when you have two fighters with very strong wrestling games, the bout ends up being a striking match.

Bellator Oddschecker Fight

Amosov has his patented anaconda choke waiting is Ed shoots and Ruth has his flying knee. I think those threats along with the takedown defense of each man will keep this one standing.

Bellator Oddschecker Premier League

Amosov is the more polished mixed martial artist and a better striker.

It's going to be a fun one!

In Conclusion

Bellator 239 is a good looking card. I know they want to feature a couple of heavyweights in what will likely be a prelude to Fortune and Moldavsky clashing.

I really do like the level of athlete Bellator has been bringing in lately. They are catching up with the UFC.

I still think they simply have too far to go to get there but they are closing the gap in talent, watchability, and popularity.

With that being said, it was a fairly wide gap, to begin with.

  • I still enjoy the shows. At least Bellator is a little bit easier to keep up with. The UFC has what is seemingly an unlimited amount of bodies to throw in there.
  • I think if Bellator continues to let their fighters be themselves and possibly push some storylines, the organization will continue to grow with the sport.

As for our picks, the first two are slam dunks. (-800) sucks but it's free money. Hit the parlay too.

Bellator Oddschecker Australian Open

Myles Jury, though, ugh. I believe he has enough reach that he can comfortably pick off Girtz as the wild animal is coming forward. Myles has long legs and will need to throw them with power.

And in the main event, Amosov is just too smooth and good at mixed martial arts. Ed Ruth can get there but I think he will be half a step behind on Friday night.
